FRANKLIN — Save for new traffic lights, asphalt and striping, the McEwen Drive extension from Mallory Lane to Cool Springs Boulevard might already be open to Franklin commuters.
But traffic is months away from flowing on the new portion of the road, which is expected to ease heavy traffic on Cool Springs Boulevard.
Stalled negotiations with Gateway Tire and Service Center and controversy among aldermen have accompanied plans for two traffic lights proposed from the McEwen Drive/Interstate 65 interchange down to the McEwen Drive/Cool Springs Boulevard. A third traffic light at Jordan Road and McEwen Drive has not had any problems thus far.
Chagrined by the delays, Mayor John Schroer wants to see the road open by summer, but concedes that may not happen.
“I would hope we can get traffic lights up before we can get an interchange (open),” Schroer said.
Officials at Southern Land Co., which is developing the McEwen Place mixed-use development and paying for a portion of the McEwen Drive extension, confirm the road needs only finishing touches to be ready but are waiting for now.
“When they’re ready for it, we’re ready to go,” said Jim Cheney, Southern Land spokesman.
